Scandinavian Potato Gratin

Potato gratin is a very traditional side dish in Scandinavia. It has for a long time been seen as a luxury side dish for a Saturday dinner. It’s so simply but every time I eat it or serve it to friends, I am almost surprised how good it really taste. Enjoy!

Ingredients (4 pers.):

  • 2 lb potatoes
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 – 2 cups half & half (milk/heavy cream)
  • fresh black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese

Pre heat the oven to 400ºF.

Start with peel and slice the potatoes really thin. Chop the onion fine.

Butter an ovenware, approximately 8” x 12”. Spread one layer of the slice potatoes into the ovenware. Then add some of the onion, pressed garlic clove and some salt. Continue in the same way with the next layer until all sliced potatoes are in the ovenware. Remember to finish with a layer slices potatoes. Add the half & half (milk/heavy cream) and some fresh black pepper. Spread the grated cheese over the top layer of slice potatoes.

Bake the potato gratin in the oven for 40-50 minutes. Place aluminium foil over the ovenware when it’s 10 minutes left of the time in oven, to avoid too much color on the gratin.

Serve with grilled meat, fish or your favorite vegetables.

Smaklig måltid!
